Theory
: The theoretical aspect of Bharatanatyam involves learning about the origins and history of the dance form, its various elements (Nritta, Nritya, and Natya), different styles, and notable practitioners. Understanding the theoretical foundation is important for a holistic understanding of the dance.

Basic Steps (Adavus): Students learn the basic steps that form the foundation of Bharatanatyam. These steps are called adavus and include movements like tattadavu, nattadavu, teermanam, and others. Each adavu is composed of a series of steps that are practiced in different rhythmic patterns.

Hand Gestures (Mudras): Mudras are hand gestures that convey specific meanings. Students learn the different mudras and their uses in storytelling and expression

Facial Expressions (Abhinaya): Bharatanatyam is known for its expressive storytelling through facial expressions. Students learn the basic expressions and how to convey emotions effectively.

Basic Dance Compositions (Alarippu, Jatiswaram): Alarippu and Jatiswaram are typically the first dance compositions a student learns. They are simple in structure and help in developing rhythm and coordination.

  • Basic Music Concepts: Understanding basic rhythm (tala), musical scales (ragas), and the relationship between dance and music is essential. Students learn to recognize and respond to different musical patterns.

  • Costume and Makeup: At this level, students might also learn about the traditional costumes and makeup used in Bharatanatyam performances. This includes the saree, jewelry, and the distinctive makeup style of Bharatanatyam dancers.
